“When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.”
Psalms 94:19
“I just can’t do it!”
Brent was facing me across a chasm. He had stepped over it easily.
I, however?
The depth of the crevice was casting shadows that distracted my peripheral vision. Those shadows were very, very convincing.
I came closer to the ledge.
“I just can’t!”
The vehicle was waiting for me on the other side. Brent was waiting. A sense of triumph was waiting, with a burst of seratonin. All I had to do was take that one step.
My knees wanted to buckle. My heart pounded.
Brent crosses over to me and measured off a step on the ground and had me practice on a flat area to show me that I could do it easily.
One step.
Just one step.
But my mind rebelled and fear spoke louder than logic.
“I just. Can’t. Do it. “
Anyone else have fears?
I have a fear of heights.
You may have a fear of spiders, or dark tight places, or strangers.
And what about these fears?
Failure.
Inadequacy.
Being alone.
Catching a virus.
There are so many times that doubts can creep in. And somehow, their voices are a lot louder than our voices of confidence.
Or faith.
You may be standing on your own ledge of sorts today.
Your brain and heart may be crowded with all the doubts that hit you as you stare at what lies ahead.
Whose voice will you choose to listen to?
Brent offered me one more piece of persuasion after all he had said and done fell flat.
“If you need to go back and find an easier way around this, you can. No shame is attached. But I KNOW you can do this.”
And you know what?
I did.
I stepped over that deep hole and it was a lot easier than I thought. My fears had built it up into something insurmountable, when it was just one step.
Whatever you face today, God’s voice is offering you comfort and cheer.
You CAN do this.
You CAN take that step of faith, over the scary precipice, over the shadows that are spinning and swirling in your peripheral vision.
Take that step of faith with me?
Father, You stretch us past our comfort zones at times. You call us to take a step of faith over a deep chasm. But You are on the other side, cheering us on, offering us hope and the comfort of Your presence. Thank You for being such a patient Guide! Give us strength to do what You called us to do this day. Amen.
