The Snooze Button

“On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭2:2-3‬ ‭

The picture of God in a hammock with a cold drink in His hand just doesn’t seem very – holy somehow.

And yet – that’s the general idea of these verses. God, a Being of infinite power and endless energy – a Someone who technically never gets tired, deliberately takes a siesta.

I mean, I get it. I only teach five days a week, and I’m beat by Friday. I may be good, but I’m only sharing information that has already been established with littles at a slow pace.

A feat to be sure, but it certainly pales in comparison to dreaming up a way to keep Jupiter from slamming into Saturn, figuring out the sticky problem of how to program a bacterium, or inventing a whole new species.

So as amazing as creation was (and it was a doozy!), the thought of God taking a nap feels preposterous.

I mean – He didn’t need one!

So aren’t you curious?

Why set aside a whole day as a marked change from the rest? Why bother?

Because God the Creator, Inventor Extraordinaire, and multi-disciplinary Scientist to boot, is also Master Teacher.

He knows that modelling what He intends to instill in His pupils is far more effective than the ‘point and command’ method.

He didn’t NEED to rest.

He needed to show US how.

We just don’t get it. We cram too many things into too short a time, and then whine when we didn’t finish our overpacked to-do lists.

Foolish humans…

I’ve done it myself. Over and over again.

I need to slow down. To pull a ‘God move’ and look at what I’ve done and appreciate the efforts and effects of my hard work. I need to learn to breathe. Smile and shrug off the frustrations.

God knows us so well. It was LOVE that prompted that first siesta. He knew how desperately we would need that lesson.

I’m still learning this one…

Remember to rest well with me?

Father, how kind of You to set aside one day in seven to set up a model of a healthy work-life balance! Help us to take full advantage of our days off. Thank You for the gift of rest. Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at, and my poetry is stashed at Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
