Dressed for Success

“Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭

Ever dressed for success?

Maybe you had an important job interview. Maybe you wanted to impress your boyfriend’s family. Your first day in a new job, a blind date, a special occasion – any of these could have prompted some care and attention to your appearance.

We’ve spent the past few days learning to know our Creator better by looking more closely at the account of creation found in Genesis. And this gem of the Apostle Paul’s helps us know what to DO with our fresh insights.

Simple!

Dress for success!

Put on your new nature.

Um – what?

Sounds sketchy.

So let’s unpack that just a bit, shall we?

We need to ‘put on’ something we’ve been provided with – a ‘new nature’. By faith, our fallen self gets a gift – when we believe that Jesus died in our place to take the punishment for our sin, our old fallen self is transformed. We receive this mysterious ‘new nature’, one that has the capacity to grow spiritually. We are suddenly alive, ready to think about spiritual matters in brand new ways.

But – how do you put on something you can’t see??

When you put on your outfit in the morning, you add dignity and a layer of protection to your bare skin. Your clothing enhances your style and appearance and behaves like your second skin. They are what others will see. You could have the most amazing wardrobe in the world – but if you don’t get dressed, you naked, girl.

When we get dressed in our new nature, we are clothing our spirit with our ‘God-clothes’ and learning to be comfortable in them, like a favourite pair of jeans. They cover us and move with us and help identify us. This kind of power dressing wraps the truth of our new vibrant reality around as we go about our daily routines, offering both protection and pizzazz.

And look what happens as we appropriate this new ‘second skin’ for ourselves – we are renewed.

Renewed!

As in – transformed from the inside out! And here’s the best part – the transformation makes us more and more like our Creator.

Oooooh, I want that. Don’t you?

If you aren’t wearing your new nature – you just naked, girl.

Learn to dress for success with me?

Father, how many good gifts You have provided for us! Thank You for this new nature, this new capacity to learn and grow deeper spiritually as Your truth brings us life. Renew us and continue to make us more like Your beautiful and glorious self. Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
