Drop It!

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” I Peter 5:7

Ah, but those trees are wise – and it’s a wisdom from the ages, a theme written from the beginning of time.

They slept all the way through the winter, recharging their energy banks and storing up great gobs of goodness in their roots. When spring smiled her warm welcome, they took that energy and went to work creating life and food from sunshine and air and sap – something you and I definitely CAN’T.

The summer breezes saw them make the switch from quantity to quality. They slowed down and set a more reasonable pace. They worked on maintenance protocol and soaked up the sun.

They are letting go…

Rainbows are scattered on my lawn, as a poet once remarked. Every shade of autumn is piling up, prayers of surrender and submission to the Creator of life and seasons.

And in the gentle rhythms of life being played out around me, I see the lessons – God, who values abundance and hard work and productivity, also values fingers that know when to release their grip.

So drop it!

Drop it. Drop the perfectionism. Drop the striving. Drop the idea that you and you alone have to do everything.

Drop the responsibility for things that were never yours. Drop the ‘religion’ (which is simply US trying to get to God on our own terms), and rest in the knowledge that Jesus already did all the hard work.

GOD came to US.

What can you let go of today that will make your workload lighter? Expectations? A habit that isn’t helpful? Time on social media?

Or how about all those thoughts and assumptions that keep you chained to your poor self esteem and anxiety?

Ah, friend.

Drop it.

Drop it all.

The trees know how to cast their cares. They practice every year.

Learn to let go with me??

Father, how wise to act out how to let go and drop our burdens in the seasons. We see the beautiful surrender every year. This year, help us to be wise in what we choose to let go of. Give us eyes to see the things that we ought to be dropping, that we would have more space to pick up YOU!! Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
