Quite the Mess

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Ephesians‬ ‭3:20‬ ‭

Oh. My.

This is quite the mess.

I don’t generally go in for things like that, but if I didn’t know any better, I’d say my kitchen had just endured a zombie apocalypse.

Onion skins. Bits of chopped peppers. Tomato seeds, tomato pulp, tomato splashes – these are liberally sprayed hither and yon, gory in their exuberance and creative in their choice of surface.

An old Electrosol pail is filled to the brim with mangled tomato skins, pepper tops, onion bottoms, and papery garlic castoffs.

The evidence is unmistakable.

It’s salsa day.

Don’t get me wrong. The process of turning tomatoes, peppers, onions and garlic into something so delectable is worth the crying over cut onions. I do it every year. The smell alone is worth the kitchen disaster.

But that flavour though!

We haven’t been able to find a store bought variety that can even come close to the real deal. Every vegetable in the pot came from my garden. Each ingredient packs a punch with its flavour and texture.

It’s truly a delightful result.

Can I remind you today that YOU aren’t finished yet??

And in the process as you and I are chopped, pinched, pressed, and drained, may I remind you that it will get messy?

See, the finished product was in God’s mind before you were born. He chose you. He planted you. He carefully tended and watered and drove away the pests as you grew.

Now, it’s salsa day…

Yep, I’m a mess.

A freaking zombie apocalypse.

But – there’s a purpose at work here! I’m being changed from my raw materials into something magnificent! God wants to do something beyond what I can even dream up, and some of you know how wild my imagination can get…

Here’s the thing.

God doesn’t mind the mess. He isn’t scared to get His hands dirty. He knows that for the best flavour, those rotten bits need to come out. That stringy pulp, those over-spicy seeds, that patch of diseased skin – they need to go. The Elecrosol pail will pile high, and there will be times when you look at the chaos and wonder if it is even worth it.

But it IS!

Friend, your finished product is going to be simply sensational! It will be not just a bit better, not one product line above, but INFINITELY MORE than you could ask or imagine.

Yeah, I know.

I’m looking around at my life, too.

Quite. The. Mess.

But faith sees that the process will produce an end, and that the end justifies the means.

Mmmmmm, mmmmmm.

We’re going to be SOMETHING!

Wait for the glory with me?

Father, in Your power, You are continually changing us, moulding us, cutting away the bits that don’t match Your character, producing the flavour, texture, and aroma that will bring You the most glory. Keep us anchored in the chaos when life gets real. Help us to learn to sit patiently in the discomfort of change, and give us eyes of faith to look beyond the mess to the magnificence that lies ahead. Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
