“I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.”
The dreaded will.
Most of us need to write one – it makes things a lot easier on those who are dealing with our death.
It’s not exactly the talk around the water cooler at the office on a Monday morning.
“How was your weekend?”
“Oh, it was incredible! The hubs and I had a blast drawing up our wills at the lawyer’s and trying to divvy up all our assets fairly and appropriately among our amazing progeny!”
Said no one.
I don’t have a lot to leave, but what I do have, I want it to be a gift, a pleasant experience rather than an imposition. I grew up reading stories of mysterious heiresses and rags to riches transformations at the last psychological moment in exciting circumstances.
Not my little offering.
Which is why it’s totally mind-blowing to read and reread this verse.
You need to read it again.
Did you catch it?
If you belong to Jesus, you are God’s inheritance.
And not only that.
You are His rich and glorious inheritance.
As in, if there were a will written granting God some property, you would be in it.
As in, you and I are a big deal to God.
Because all we have is – nothing. And God somehow gets a lot of street cred for taking our nothing, our mess, our inadequacy, our pain, and weaving hope and joy and growth and character development and holiness through and in and around it.
And He considers that work to be His inheritance. His payout. His glory.
To even begin to comprehend a truth so utterly preposterous, we need help. The Apostle Paul was praying for his friends here, that their ‘hearts would be flooded with light’ so they could grasp this one staggering truth.
You are loved.
You are thought of. Considered. Valued.
You are in the will.
Be blown away by the audacious fact that you and I are God’s inheritance?
Father, we need our hearts to be flooded with light to even comprehend that You would value us this much!! Help us to live fully alive, knowing that we are a part of Your glorious inheritance! Continue changing us, making us into people who will make You look amazing!!! Amen.
