“In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
“Where to now?”
I consult the crudely drawn map.
“To the gazebo! Ruuuun!”
(That last was mine. I don’t run much on purpose anymore.)
“Now where? Now where?”
*me trying not to pant*
“We have to check by the swings!”
*giggles and squeals of delight*
*more footsteps and panting*
“Is this where we dig?”
We find the bedraggled prize – toy animals hidden in the playground sand. The exultation is real. The triumph is palpable.
Who doesn’t love a treasure hunt?
And God, having designed us, knows better than any of us the power of a treasure map. An ancient manuscript, carefully copied for generations onto parchment scraps or hide leather, stashed in caves, discovered and preserved and guarded with numerous lives over centuries in the desert.
The stuff of Legend…
It isn’t always easy, following the clues. Sometimes they are – less than spelled out. The path is sometimes obscure. It takes effort. It may be uncomfortable, digging up information from a distant geographical location, from a removed point in history, and make sense of it from our own cultural context.
But there is a real treasure at stake.
There is a treasure map – the Bible. It leaves us instructions and clues, but it is up to us to piece things together and dig deeper, move beyond the surface, tussle with the issues of life and loss and justice and how to apply hard truths to imperfect hearts.
But who ever said a treasure hunt was easy?
But isn’t anything worth having, worth some effort?
God knows us so well. He knows that unless we dig it up for ourselves, get involved in the chase, we won’t be invested. Won’t take the hunt seriously. Won’t understand what’s at stake.
All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge…
Start an epic treasure hunt with me??
Father, thank you for giving us a colossal treasure hunt! What an interesting way to get to know You – and ourselves – better! Bless us with success as we study the clues and follow the marked path to find You! Amen.
