Light it Up!

“He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭2:32‬ ‭

Ok. I’ll admit it.

I’m a light addict.

This time of year, I have an evening ritual – it involves candles, a variety of lighters, battery strings, plug ins, timers – the works. Hubby teases me that he has to give me a half hour heads up at bedtime, just so I can make the rounds and turn them all off again.

He exaggerates.

(It’s more like 15 minutes.)

But I know I’m not the only one who enjoys the sparkle and cheer of Christmas lights! The aisles crammed with every conceivable way to light up your world can attest to that.

We owe that tradition to Jesus.

That first Christmas, the skies were lit with angels. And when the prophet Simeon met the baby at the temple when Jesus was eight days old, he uttered these beautiful prophetic words as he held his Saviour in his arms – this baby would be the Light of the World, the One who would reveal the heart of God to the world He created.

The only way to drive out the darkness within our culture, within our home, within our heart, is to light it up.

From the inside.

Lighting trends come and go. New ways to add glow and sparkle catch on or fade away with the changing tides of fads and marketing gimmicks.

But the darkness out there remains…

We think we are ‘enlightened’ with our knowledge and technology and gadgetry. We feel smugly superior to our fellow sojourners from other times, other places.

You needn’t look far to see with your own eyes how unenlightened a race we truly are…pick up a newspaper or read your newsfeed or catch a few sound bytes and you will be slammed with it.

Ugly. Isolating. Smothering. Painful and depressing and debilitating darkness.

Which is why it is so very crucial to light it up!

But to ignite a spark that can penetrate such darkness, we need the Light of the World.

Enter Advent.

A celebration of Light! The baby born to a dark world that He might light it up from the inside – from hearts ignited with a passion to follow His Light and spread hope and peace in His footsteps.

The only way to chase away the darkness is to turn on the light.

Light it up with me?

Father, there is so much darkness that it terrifies and confounds us! Remind us that only Jesus holds the source of all that is good – and that we need the Light of the World every day, every moment, so we can shine with His power and strength! Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at, and my poetry is stashed at Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
