Worth Celebrating

“Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; celebrate his lovely name with music.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭135:3‬ ‭

“It’s 2021!”

“It sure is!” I agreed. “Happy New Year!”

The exclamation came at me again.

“It’s 2021!! It really really is! It’s 2021!”

I giggled.

(It slipped out. It does, sometimes.)

He was just so – so – festive about it. When you are seven and acting like a mini town crier with that level of joy, you tend to tempt the giggles out of folks.

Everyone who walked down the hallway was greeted in turn with the jubilant proclamation. It never wavered in either intensity or enthusiasm.

He must have announced it at least 25 times.

It was just something worth sharing. Unaware that all of us had gotten the memo four days ago, this little was determined that no one would move through his or her day not having heard this delightful bit of news.

He was still making his proclamation at irregular intervals throughout the day, as the feeling struck him.

The joy was contagious!

It was a fact, to this little, worth celebrating.

And I’ve been thinking.

Isn’t this verse a delight?

When is the last time you ‘celebrated the lovely name’ of God?

I mean, we sing in church, sure. That’s expected. A service with no music at all would be odd.

But – singing as a spontaneous and exuberant celebration? A celebration of the name of God? Feeling the need to share that delectable fact with everyone around you?

What a lovely thought.

And how unlike the church I grew up attending – the one where everyone sat stiff and uncomfortable, and sang through stiff lips to dull and draggy organ music.

How un-celebratory.

I love the music at my church. There are drums and a bass guitar – it’s upbeat and beautiful. (And not just because I often play the piano and set a quick tempo!)

It’s because there is a lot to celebrate – and you can feel it. It’s real. It’s worship – imperfect, but sincere and holy.

So – let me take my turn.

Hey, everybody! It’s 2021! It really really is!

A fresh new year. A fresh new opportunity to remember that God is good. That His name is lovely. That He is with us, every step of the way.

And that, my friends, is worth celebrating.

Father, we want to take this opportunity to celebrate You! We want to pour out our delight in Your presence, Your promises, Your faithfulness. Put a song in our hearts as we go about each day, for Your name is lovely! Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
