The Great I Spy

“Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭34:3‬ ‭

Who doesn’t love a magnifying glass?

I mean, they’re fun, right?

They make you feel like Sherlock Holmes looking for clues. They help you see things better by bringing them in closer.

Indeed, they make things look bigger. They make small print readable, the inscrutable more – er, scrutable.

In short, they bring things into focus.

When my littles start reading, they like to play my ‘I Spy’ game. I print their sight words in attractive pictures of fall foliage.

Sounds dull so far. Let me explain.

The sight words are printed in a font at size two.

Two.

Have you done much reading at a font size of two, y’all?

The poor things need a magnifying glass to find those sight words in the scenes.

Hence, the magnifying glasses included in the packages.

They love it.

Did you know you and I are magnifying glasses for God?

Not to make Him bigger – He’s already pretty big. Not to improve on Him in any way, in fact – you really can’t improve on perfect.

And yet we can magnify Him just the same.

We can bring Him into focus for someone who doesn’t know Him yet. We can draw attention to the details of His character. We can help others to see Him more clearly by being a clear reflection of who He is and what He stands for.

We can make a big deal out of Him – place Him where He belongs, large and in charge.

Everything you do – every act of kindness that echoes His heart, every choice to serve and love the unloveable, lift up the weary, or bring courage to those who feel like giving up – these actions all magnify the God of heaven. They bring clarity and focus and make God’s name great.

And when we work together to make God’s name great?

I spy with my little eye a beautiful opportunity to bring a lot of glory to God…

Determine to behave like a magnifying glass with me?

Father, thank You for the daily opportunity You give us to make Your name great! Help us to accurately reflect who You are with our words and actions. Teach us how to beautifully and naturally draw others’ attention to Your wonderful characteristics. Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
