Who Knew?

“God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:3‬ ‭

Look what I found!

(You look puzzled. You don’t know what this is?)

Interesting.

(That’s okay. I didn’t know what it was either, until I looked it up.)

It’s a wee patch of Field Bird’s Nest Fungus!

Until yesterday I didn’t even know it existed…

There’s a whole family of fungi called bird’s nest fungi, named for the way their fruiting bodies resemble eggs in a nest.

They are seriously cute.

Who knew?

But here’s the thing.

There are gabillions of weird life forms out there, and I have only seen a minute fraction of them. And paid attention to even less.

But the more I open my eyes to observe what’s around me, the more I’m amazed at the creative genius of God.

Seriously.

I just watched a short clip about ‘raccoon dogs’ yesterday too, and had no idea those existed either. (They are a real thing. Look them up.)

The fact that all these critters and plants and fungi and insects all have different habits, different habitats, and different quirks that set them apart from other living things amazes me. I mean, bird’s nest fungi?

Who knew?

It reminds me that with all these differences, God is a God who really does value individuality, uniqueness, and diversity.

The next time you’re tempted to try to be more like – whoever you are trying to be more like, think of this little bird’s nest fungi. A God who cared to design something so cute, so tiny, and so intricate, has a pretty sweet design going on in you.

Who knew?

Well – pretty much all of us who know and appreciate you.

It’s about time you knew it, too.

Learn to appreciate your individuality with me?

Father, thank You for creating bird’s nest fungi. Thank You that as we take delight in the details of the funky and diverse living things around us, our hearts are reminded that You appreciate and value our uniqueness. Help us to truly appreciate the uniqueness of our own complexity and craftsmanship! Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
