Firmly Fixed

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭26:3‬ ‭

“This seems a good spot. Let’s try here,” Hubby declared.

The fishing commenced. (He fished. I read.) But something seemed amiss.

“Are we drifting?” I asked, taking a quick look around.

“Can’t be. I dropped the anchor. We’re good.” Hubby spoke with confidence as he sent a fishing lure expertly over my left ear.

I dove back into my novel.

Time passed pleasantly. A motor speeding by caught my attention. I glanced up. Now I was certain of it.

“We are drifting. Look! Weren’t we closer to that blue cabin with the dock in front?” I pointed to the real estate in question.

“Look at this one! Now, that’s a fish!” Hubby grinned, pulling another scaly critter into the boat.

I squinted towards shore.

Uh-huh.

Drifting.

I resumed reading.

Half an hour later, I was unceremoniously jerked back to real life by a startled declaration.

“I think we’re drifting! Look how far away we are from that blue cabin with the dock out front!”

Yeah. Told you so.

Living life is a little like that.

You think you’re solid, grounded, and then realize you aren’t where you thought you were.

Have you ever found your thoughts – drifting? Heading places you didn’t expect? I tell you, I can go from serenity to panic, mentally planning a funeral for someone who isn’t even sick yet in about three minutes flat if I’m not careful.

So – how to stay in peaceful waters?

Look at these wise words from the prophet Isaiah. The trick to tranquility, to remaining calm, to perfect peace, is to keep our thoughts fixed on God.

As in, anchored. Not aimlessly drifting, but ordered, controlled, reigned in. The correspondence between a disorderly chaotic thought life and a disorderly chaotic response to life is just as clear as how a determination to raise our thoughts heavenward leads to a state of calm serenity.

It all starts with our thinking. Thoughts become attitudes. Attitudes become habits. Habits become a life.

Hmm.

The practice of training our brains to think on God – His acts of kindness in the past, His character traits, His opinion of us as valued and precious, is what keeps us anchored in life. These profound truths will hold us in place while all of life rushes by in its loud and disruptive chatter, its determination to run us off course.

Keep your thoughts firmly fixed on God with me?

Father, You are stability and strength and peace in a world swirling with chaos and noise. Teach us to keep our thoughts firmly fixed in the truths of Your Word, and reward us with Your perfect peace. Amen.
