““ ‘ “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ’”
I used to be able to walk through this arch.
You know – upright. Not folded in half like a freshly laundered shirt. Since I snapped this photo, we’ve gotten even more snow, so the only way to get through is to squeeze through on my knees. There is a bench to the right of this arch. You may not believe me because you can’t see it – but it’s there, all right, buried completely in its winter coat.
It’s actually hard to imagine this garden entrance being green and verdant and inviting. Its currently so plugged with snow, spring is a thing of the imagination.
Point being, you ask?
We who exist so far north know all about what happens when our face is turned from the sun.
We cool off. The days get shorter. Temperatures drop, north winds bring arctic air rushing into our nostrils, and winter settles with a thud.
But here’s the thing.
Since the winter solstice, things have been slowly changing.
Little by little, the angle at which we face the sun is shifting. By spring solstice, we can turn our backs on the cold and dark days and welcome warmth and brilliance back into our lives. The northern regions of the earth will be tilted towards the sun once again, making all the difference in the world.
And when God turns His face toward us, when He blesses us, when He gives us His peace, we are just as far removed from a spiritual wasteland as a spring day from an arch frozen over.
These words are the words of the great man of God named Moses. He is praying a blessing over his people, knowing the dramatic difference God makes in a life when His hand of blessing is upon it. When we are turned away from God, it is as if we are blasted with polar ice. When we turn to Him, and He turns His face to us, His smile is like the warm breezes of spring which cause us to grow healthy, green, and beautiful.
What a lovely way to enter the day – facing the light.
I pray these words over you today as you read this. I pray that the Lord bless you and keep you. I pray that His face would shine upon you. I pray that He would pour out His grace upon you. Like the earth tilting toward the sun’s rays, may God turn towards you and give you peace.
Face the light with me today?
Father, what a difference it makes in our environment when we have tilted closer toward the sun. Just as the sun warms and thaws and causes gardens to grow, may You turn towards us and give us Your peace. Amen.
