Sometimes, We Need to Feel Small

““God is so great—higher than the heavens, higher than the farthest stars.”
‭‭Job‬ ‭22:12‬ ‭

See Hubby in this pic?

Well, he does look rather – er, small. Six feet tall in his boots, he is rather dwarfed by this lovely 60 foot spruce.

We were delighted to spend some quality time with the trees recently, drinking in the sights and smells of old growth forest. And the overall feeling we came away with was how very small we are.

Small, compared with the girth, breadth and height of some of these monstrous balsam firs and poplars, spruces and pines. There’s nothing like getting up close and personal with nature to remind you of your place in the scheme of things.

Sometimes there is a danger – a temptation to think we are the centre of the universe and we whine and growl and want, want, want. We talk of our ‘rights’, of what we ‘deserve’. We grasp and uproot and create huge upheaval to obtain what we feel is only our fair share.

How small we really are…

Enter Job.

Dear Job. Remember him? He lost more than most of us will ever lose, and still was able to worship and not complain of his injustice. In the midst of his troubles, he reminded the friends who came to commiserate with him of the bigness of God.

He had been face to face with his misery, mighty as a giant spruce, and still saw God as bigger.

I marvel at the perspective, the knowledge of God and His ways that he had, without the benefit of the written word of God that reveals His character to us. Here is a man who knew what it was to feel small before a mighty God, yet still trust in His might and power.

Sometimes, we need to feel small.

We need to remember that we are important, yes, but only a part of what is. We must take our place in the wider picture, and realize how much we need the greatness of a good God.

We had a wee glimpse of God’s bigness as we enjoyed a beautiful part of His creation this weekend. And knowing that God is greater far has given us reason to worship in awe.

Remember your place – and God’s greatness – with me?

Father, how big You are! We need reminders of how high and mighty and completely unlike humans You are, to regain that necessary perspective. Amen.
