Cup of Blessing

“Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭16:5‬ ‭

See my cup of blessing?

(Well, technically it is a peony, but I’m sure you will humour me a little.)

I wrote about this beauty a few weeks ago. I shared how amazingly fast this plant grows in the spring.

But now it’s blooming!

It’s absolutely outdoing itself this year. It puts on a great show generally every June, but my goodness, is it something right now!

As soon as the snow melts, there it is – one of the very first perennials to break out of its dark prison and start to grow. It send up pinkish curly stalks that grow several centimetres per day. I swear I could watch it grow.

And then the leaves uncurl and hey, presto! A plant!

And hey presto, buds form.

And then it blooms! And it absolutely radiates joy.

It is indeed a ‘cup of blessing’.

It makes my heart happy every time I walk by. Even after it blooms this amazing peony holds those deep green serrated leaves aloft for the rest of the season, adding texture and height and shape and visual interest.

What is your cup of blessing?

Is it your flower garden? Your partner? Maybe it is your children, your job, your friendships.

Here’s the thing.

God wants to be your cup of blessing.

Isn’t that something?

God wants to be your cup of blessing. Your happy place. Your oasis. Your joy, your reason for loving, your treasure.

Doesn’t that set your idea of God on its head?

I mean, this is no killjoy with a gavel in the clouds. This is Someone who wants connection with us. This is Someone who brings richness and value and commitment to the relationship. This is Someone who not only won’t leave or forsake you, but is willing to guard and protect you and your relationship.

That is indeed a deep, full, overflowing cup of blessing.

And just as I seek to protect my peony from insect pests or frost or other potential harm, you and I have an advocate in Jesus, Someone in our corner. Someone who will do what is necessary to keep our hearts and spirits growing and vibrant and beautiful.

What if we started our day greeting God as our ‘cup of blessing’?

What if we went there for help and comfort (and skipped the chocolate?)

What if we got our sense of self, our purpose, our motivation from God’s opinion of us?

It might just help us to walk further into being the blessings we were designed to be.

Start thinking of God as a cup of blessing with me?

Father, You are a rich blessing. Help us to recognize the amazing power of Your blessing in our lives. Guide us further into a deeply satisfying connection with You today. Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at, and my poetry is stashed at Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and let's grow together!
