Hibernation Mode

“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119:18‬ ‭

My wee reading group read a book today about a bear who had a hard time waking up after a long winter nap.

In the story, all the lovely signs of spring – the sunshine, the scent of flowers, the buzz of bees – were trying to get the bear to open her eyes.

She was just too sleepy.

She dozed on, missing all the wonderful gifts and delights of springtime.

At the time, she was stuck in hibernation mode.

Ever been there?

Hung up on an old grievance, and missing the opportunity for reconciliation?

So focused on the negatives that you can’t see the flip side?

Stuck in the dying embers of Plan A when Plan B, or C, or even D hold a lot of hidden potential?

Yup.

Hibernation mode.

Sometimes we need to open our eyes in order to see what’s in front of our nose.

Things like ‘wonderful truths’.

‘Instructions’.

Haven’t you ever bemoaned the lack of a manual to help you through life?

Ever wished a golden scroll with guidelines would drop from the ceiling when you are in full-fledged decision mode?

Open your eyes!

There is wonderful truth hidden in plain sight, instructions to help you navigate the tricky bits of your journey.

But sometimes we are too sleepy, too anxious, too firmly planted in either the past or the future to be able to take hold of what is available in the present.

Been there, done that.

I’ve been reading and studying the Bible all my life. And I still need to pray with the Psalmist, “Open my eyes!”

Open my eyes.

As in, help me to sit up and take notice. Help me to focus on, pay attention to, the amazing truth set before me.

What kind of truth?

I am loved.

I have been chosen for a purpose.

I have deep worth. I matter. The King of heaven moved heaven and earth to save me.

And because I matter, because I have value, I am given instructions – both to help me to build healthy horizontal relationships with those around me, but also to strengthen my vertical relationship with my maker.

Things like don’t be a jerk. Don’t steal. Don’t cheat. Do unto others. Love deeply. Give. Be a contributor, a kingdom builder.

But without our eyes snapping open, it’s easy to get the wrong idea, to misinterpret or misunderstand the intent and heart behind the rule.

Hence the prayer offered here. Open my eyes…

No more hibernation mode.

Pray that you will see more of this truth with me?

Father, we are sleepy, inattentive, pulled in so many directions. Help us to focus on Your beautiful Word, and see it for the pure and holy and wonderful truth it really is. Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and lets grow together!
