Double Portion

“Instead of shame and dishonor, you will enjoy a double share of honor. You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭61:7‬ ‭

Twins are pretty special.

I mean, two babies developing in a womb at the same time?

A double blessing. Just like these daylilies. Where one is lovely, two are stunning.

The prophet Isaiah prophesied doom and destruction back in the day for Israel. The people had lost focus. They had abandoned the practices handed down by their champion Moses, and had picked up all the habits of the surrounding nations that had caused God to drive them out to make room for His own people.

Oh, oh.

Sin has consequences. What we do and don’t do matters. It matters now, and it mattered then.

What the people chose to persist in doing – idol worship, dishonest trade, oppressive policies, violence, acts of injustice toward the vulnerable – piled up.

After a while, enough was enough. Yet God warned them. Sent them messages through prophets like Isaiah. Gave them lots of second chances. He is a God of grace, after all.

But He is also a God of justice. Those who had been mistreated needed to be avenged. The land itself became polluted with the vile actions of its residents.

So God allowed a foreign power to conquer His prized possession.

History proves that first Assyria, then later Babylon, battled Israel and carried off its people into exile.

Ouch.

But even while the prophecies flowed regarding their punishment, God was already planning their restoration.

After the heartache, double blessing.

God is perfect. We call that trait holiness. It is the holiness of God that demands that sin be punished. But it is the grace of God that is already there, working to bring about healing. Restoration. Life after death.

This specific promise is for Israel.

But the principles here show the very heart of God – His thought processes. His intentions. His attitudes toward sin and the people He loves.

His justice demands He won’t let sin go unpunished.

His grace demands He step in to save and restore where we cannot save ourselves.

When you see twins – a double blessing – remember that God is seeking you out and wanting to offer the double blessing of forgiveness and restoration.

What a beautiful offer.

Seek this double portion of blessing with me?

Father, thank You for Your powerful sense of justice that is always at work to set wrongs right. But thank You that through the workings of Your grace, our own wrongs can be covered and obliterated. May the double blessings of Your kindness and mercy rest in us today. Amen.

I am actually a bit of a mess. But in the mess, I’m finding security in knowing I am chosen, I am forgiven, and I matter. After uncovering a history of abuse in my past, I have done a lot of healing - and writing is one way I can invite you deeper into your own healing journey! I write devotionals about the complicated thing called life at growing-in-grace.ca, and my poetry is stashed at melodylowes.com. Pull up a chair and a coffee or tea and lets grow together!
